Opinion: The Blitzkrieg of Free Thought

The veil has been torn on the “Woke” Agenda.  In an embarrassing flop, the pollsters underestimated yet again the mind of the conservative voter.  Republicans are likely to maintain control of the Senate in a year when the blue wave was expected to descend upon Washington DC with a resounding splash.  Instead the Democrats lost extra seats in the House of Representatives and, if Joe Biden is indeed named the President-elect (as he is presumed to become when the electoral college votes on December, 14 2020), he will take office as a president who won by one of the thinnest margins in history in a country with deep ideological divides.

But despite likely losing the presidency, this election was an incredible victory for conservatives.

The explanation for the lack of foresight into these results (Biden was predicted to win by 11 points overall and instead is likely winning by the skin of his teeth) is due in part to a continued misunderstanding of the influence of the “Trump factor” and discord regarding the vision of the Democratic caucus amongst their representatives.

More moderate Democrats are speaking out against the progressive Leftists in their party and blaming those radical agendas as the reason why the Democrat races fell so short of expectation in both the Senate and House.  Has this produced a healthy dialogue within the party?  Not remotely.  Instead, the radical Left has doubled down on their calls for socialism, defunding the police, adding states, stacking the Supreme Court, and ending the oil industry despite obvious resistance to these ideas.

In the meantime, calls for unity are ringing out, though the messaging remains unclear.  Many on the far Left, still touting slurs of fascism against President Trump, are mobilizing with a concerning effort to silence, cancel, and disenfranchise Trump supporters who represent the viewpoint of half the American population.  Making an enemies list in an attempt to completely snuff out a certain culture or viewpoint is far more reminiscent of fascism, the Nazi Socialist Party, and the Soviet Union than any action heretofore of the Right. High ranking Democrats continue to call the 70+ million Trump supporters evil, hate-mongering, misogynistic, bigots.

Sounds like unity to me.

Classifying this progressive movement as being “woke” is a wonderful misnomer, because the results are in and in the wake of the election it is the members of the Left that need to open their eyes.  The racist and white supremacist accusations against Trump are signifcantly brought into question when exit polls show that he not only gained higher percentages of minority votes than any GOP candidate since 1960, but apparently lost the most votes with Caucasian men.  Evidently many people resent being lumped into uniformly sentient groups based on their skin color.  The irony of identity politics is that it fuels further racism and pits groups and tribes against one another.  If racial consciousness is our only driving factor for making decisions then how is it possible to reach a place where there is equality of race? Americans want to exercise their own mind, their own reasoning, and have the freedom to make their own choices.

But the right to an opinion may be on the verge of dissipating.

One of America’s greatest freedoms is the ability to respectfully speak your mind without losing your job, your house, your social sphere, and your entire livelihood.  America was born out of a dream, a debate of ideas, and a commitment to the common good.  Now it appears that there is a blitzkrieg against free thought.  The Left preaches a platform of anti-discrimnation while simultaneously discriminating against any who disagree with their viewpoint.  Big Tech censors every other conservative statement.  “Fact checks” conveniently push forth Left-wing friendly statistics while silencing objective Right-wing headlines.

No matter what your politics are, this should concern you.  If only one voice is allowed to speak then we fall into despotism.  Ostracising someone and destroying their life because they don’t agree with you is about as fascist as it gets. It is essential that free speech and free thought are protected.  This is scary stuff y’all.  Suppression of free speech, free thought, and an overreaching government is exactly what many immigrants are fleeing when they come to seek a new life in America.  What’s next?  Forced vaccination? Forced worship of a certain religion? The government leaders of some states are already starting to dictate how people can gather within the walls of their own home.  University teachers are being fired for presenting a different perspective and students are protesting any spotlight on conservative beliefs.  Books are being censored at Target and on Amazon for offering objective, common sense considerations of progressive dogmas.

When I was a child,  I loved the Animorphs book series.  This series tells the story of a group of kids who receive the ability to transform into any animal they touch.  They use these abilities to battle a secret alien infiltration of Earth.  What’s even stranger is that the aliens are slug-like creatures that enslave their hosts by entering through the ear canal and merging with the brain.  This may seem like a wild tangent; however, I can’t help but feel that something similar is happening in society today.  Not an alien invasion, but an invasion of progressive ideas, a movement to destroy conservative values.

Narratives can be parasitic.

Trump is ad nauseum being compared to Hitler, a man who used blizkrieg military tactics to enforce anti-semitic attacks and is responsible for the systematic murder of six million Jews.  Hitler attempted to eradicate the Jewish people for their ethnic origin and beliefs, yet it is the radical Left who are the ones militarizing the current attack against free thought via the “cancel culture.”  This might be news to some people.  A shocking survey of millennials and Gen Z revealed that well over half surveyed were not aware that six million Jews were killed in the Holocaust, half could not identify even one concentration camp, and in a stunning revelation, 10% felt that the Jews actually caused the Holocaust! This is what the education system and wide rage internet information sharing has brought us?  I wouldn’t be surprised if the first time many youths are learning about Hitler is in reference to Trump.

Feel free to disagree with Trump’s policies and personality (I certainly have my own criticisms and encourage others to form their own opinions), but it is way out of proportion to compare him to the man responsible for a Jewish genocide.  Holding him personally culpable for deaths that occur from a global pandemic that is affecting every country in the entire world is hardly comparable both in morality and agency.  I had my fair share of doubts regarding Trump, but in a stunning turn of events he has turned out to perhaps be the most conservative president in history and the only president of my lifetime to not start a foreign war.

The Left has been vocalizing worries about the undermining of our democracy while at the same time calling for an overhaul of the system and a complete political shift in the vision of the country.  But democracy is not compatible with socialism, communism, or fascism.  To want to fundamentally change America is to be un-American.  To silence your opponents is to be an advocate of tyranny.  Diversity of thought is essential to a well-rounded society.  Mandated unity is not unity.

It is not the peaceful transfer of power that is currently under threat, but the freedom to think your own thoughts.  Maybe you think differently.  If that’s the case, then that is your right.  I just hope for all of our sakes that it stays a right and does not become a compulsion.  Perhaps it’s not too late to save the First Amendment.
